SALARY
RANGE:
Check with current update with Personnel Department. The City
pays members 9% contribution to PERS for the 3% at age 50 retirement
formula. OPEN ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Entry may be considered for above Step One placement depending
upon qualifications.
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision patrols an area of the city in performing
public safety and law enforcement duties; controls traffic flow;
performs preliminary investigations; performs other work as required.
DISTINGUISHING
CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a journey level professional police officer classification.
It has the field responsibility for safeguarding lives and property,
providing general assistance to the public and enforcing State
and local laws.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES:
Patrol city and assigned shift in radio equipped vehicle. Responds
to calls regarding the protection of lives and property. Maintains
high visibility and accessibility to the public. Assists citizens
by giving directions and helping to relocate "lost" vehicles.
Investigates suspicious circumstances, disturbances, burglaries,
thefts, traffic accidents and incidents in which a crime has been
or may have been committed. Books, guards and transport prisoners.
Interviews witnesses, complaints and victims. Process crime scenes
for fingerprints, evidence and takes photographs. Prepares reports
and keeps records of patrol and other law enforcement activities.
Responds to family disturbances. Enforces the safe and legal operation
of motor vehicles, cautions drivers and issue citations when necessary.
Cites illegally parked vehicles. Performs subpoena and warrant
service. Apprehends, interrogates, searches, and if necessary
arrests persons. Collects and preserves evidence at a crime scene.
Controls and directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the scene
of accidents or at public functions. Administers first aid to
injured or ill persons. Picks up and transports stray animals
in the absence of the animal control officer. Checks public, business
and private residence for security. Make presentations to schools,
churches, clubs and other organizations for good public relations.
Makes a diagnosis of patrol vehicle problems and prepares appropriate
repair forms. Testifies in court as required. Provides care for
juveniles and adults in custody. Provides assistance to the watch
commander in absence of a higher ranking officer.
KNOWLEDGE
OF:
Laws of arrest, search and seizure. Penal, Vehicle, Welfare and
Institutions, Health and Safety, Fish and Game, Business and Professional
and Alcoholic Beverage Control Codes and city ordinances covering
a multitude of felony and other situations. Court decisions affecting
suspect's rights. The geography of the city, location of the streets
and buildings. Self- defense techniques. Identification and investigation
techniques. Scientific evidence collection and aspects of forensic
medicine. Federal, State and local codes pertaining to juveniles.
ABILITY
TO:
Search and if necessary subdue suspects and prisoners. Analyze
situations and act quickly and calmly in emergency situations,
exercising good judgement. Make careful observations remember
and record important details such as color, time of day, mode
of dress, numbers, faces and distances. Work cooperatively with
the public, fellow officers, superiors and law enforcement personnel
from other agencies. Speak and write effectively. Prepare clear
and accurate reports. Use a service pistol and various other weapons,
radios, radar and other equipment. Collect and preserve evidence.
Obtain valid, useful and significant information from persons
interviewed. Work independently, use crime scene evidence collection
equipment, including cameras and latent print kit.
EDUCATION
AND EXPERIENCE (LATERAL):
Any combination of training and experience, which is likely to
provide the required knowledge and abilities, would be acceptable
for employment. A typical background would be:
EDUCATION:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and completion of P.O.S.T.
Certified Academy.
EXPERIENCE:
Currently employed as a California Peace Officer with one year
of current work experience as a Police Officer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Weight in proportion to height; normal color vision and visual
functions. Acuity correctable to 20/30 in each eye; hearing normal;
agility normal.
SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Possession of a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate and a Certificate of
Completion from a P.O.S.T. Accredited Academy. Availability for
night, weekends and holiday duty. MINIMUM AGE OF 21 AT TIME
OF APPOINTMENT.
