DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine non-sworn
law enforcement functions in support of the Police Department;
to maintain, secure and store a variety of property and evidence;
to respond to citizen requests and provide information as required;
to perform a variety of duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
STATEMENTS:
The following tasks are typical for the positions in this classification.
Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or
may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
- Maintain the chain of custody, integrity, security, and inventory
of evidence and miscellaneous property; receive, log, store,
maintain, package and return evidence according to destruction
and return procedure and law; transport evidence for testing
analysis
- Maintain proper storage of property and evidence and accurate
records of disposition; prepare evidence and property for auction
or destruction as required.
- Collect, input and maintain various crime statistics
- Operate automated systems to enter and retrieve police information
and to communicate with local, State, and Federal agencies.
- Provide assistance to sworn officers in collecting and processing
evidence and miscellaneous property; if trained compare lifted
prints to known prints for possible match.
- Perform police records technician maintenance duties as may
be required from time to time.
- May serve as matron when trained in conducting strip searches
of transporting female prisoners. Incentive pay is provided
for matron training and availability
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Laws and regulations governing the storage, documentation,
release and disposition of evidence and property.
- Principles and practices of filing and record keeping.
- Methods and techniques of report preparation.
- Principles and practices of data entry.
- Basic principles and practices of police records maintenance.
- Fingerprint applicants on automated system.
- Maintain supplies and equipment.
- Transport persons, documents, and equipment as required.
- Conduct department tours.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities.
ABILITY TO:
- Maintain a secure and organized evidence and property custody
system
- Maintain accurate records, indexes and files.
- Assist in the identification of fingerprints.
- Operate various office equipment including a computer and
printer
- Prepare clear and concise reports
- Perform general police records maintenance functions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Established and maintain effective working relationships with
those contacted in the course of work.
- Basic typing/keyboarding use.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION
AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and education/training that would
likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

No experience is required. The department will provide training
Education/Training
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Environmental Conditions
Typically office environment; certain duties may require some
field work.
Physical Conditions
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition
necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time.
