SEASIDE VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION
The
Mission
The mission of the Seaside Police Department, Volunteers in Action
(V.I.A.) is to augment and perform specific tasks for the department
that otherwise could not be undertaken by full time police personnel
due to concerns with budget, time or personnel. V.I.A. allows
the volunteers to share their time, wisdom, and talent in a rewarding
experience with the department in furthering its mission of "service
to the community."
The
Program
V.I.A. is a carefully selected group of volunteers who work a
minimum of four hours a week assisting the police department as
special community ambassadors. As a proactive crime prevention
team, they will fill a variety of roles, wear uniforms and drive
a specially marked vehicle while they work in their selected or
assigned tasks. No assignment will place a volunteer in harms
way.
Volunteer Support Tasks:

Station Assistant Volunteer: Assist with
clerical tasks, answering phones, and other general office
tasks. Assist at the front counter by answering phone calls
and citizen inquiries. Perform tasks promoting the efficient
operation of the department, vehicle maintenance, or assist
with transport of evidence, reports and other items to courts
and laboratories.

Computer Support Volunteer: Assist with
grant applications. Conduct research through department computer
programs, compile crime data for specific problem areas, and
statistical data. Ability to operate Microsoft Office software,
produce and present statistical reports is desirable.

Community Watch Volunteer: Assist Community
Liaison Office with residential and commercial watch programs,
gathering information, finding solutions for problems, and
solving other community concerns. Assist public with crime
prevention techniques, operation and maintenance of police
internet site. Attend and report on assigned public meetings.
Assist the police department at public functions such as checkpoints
and parades. Conduct high-visibility, two-person patrols either
on foot or in a vehicle serving as additional eyes and ears
for the department.
Qualifications:
- 21 years of age or older and in relatively good health
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States of America
- Living in Seaside or having a vested interest in the City
of Seaside
- Even temperament with good interpersonal skills when working
with the public or members of the department
- Ability to communicate effectively and work with diverse racial
backgrounds and cultures
- Ability to follow directions and have problem solving skills
- No felony convictions and an acceptable driving record
- Successfully complete interview procedure and background check
- Bilingual, especially in Spanish, is desirable, but not required
- Dependable and committed to the mission of V.I.A.
